Frequently asked questions
How is income tax (Einkommensteuer) calculated in Germany?
Germany uses a formula-based progressive system under §32a EStG. The tax-free allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is €12,348 in 2026. The rate climbs progressively from 14% to 42% (Spitzensteuersatz) above €69,879, and 45% (Reichensteuersatz) on income above €277,825.
What is the solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag)?
The Soli is 5.5% of the income tax amount. It was abolished for most earners in 2021 but remains for higher incomes. A Milderungszone begins around €20,350 of income tax liability - earners below this threshold pay no Soli at all.
How much are social security contributions in Germany?
Total employee contributions are roughly 20% of gross salary. Health and care insurance (KV+PV) costs approximately 11.15% on earnings up to €69,750 per year. Pension and unemployment (RV+AV) costs 10.6% on earnings up to €101,400 per year. Contributions are capped above these Beitragsbemessungsgrenzen.
Is church tax (Kirchensteuer) included?
No. Kirchensteuer of 8-9% of income tax applies only to registered members of a recognised church. It is excluded from this calculator, which shows the tax burden for a non-church-member.
